The East Hampshire session for the beginner and improving musician

Do you play a fiddle, flute, recorder, whistle, squeezebox – in fact any acoustic instrument which suits a traditional tune – but feel a bit overwhelmed by the idea of trying to join in with the typical folk music session?

The idea of this one is that we try to play tunes at a pace to suit everybody, so that even beginners will feel able to have a go at something. Our Session Tunebook now has over 80 tunes in it, and clearly it will take a while to learn them all! The first half of the evening features the easier tunes played at a very steady tempo, and after the break we play the more challenging tunes, perhaps slightly faster. Most months there will be a new tune introduced, so that gradually everyone can build up a solid repertoire of the most popular session tunes, which will hopefully give you confidence to join in elsewhere.

We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at the Three Horseshoes pub in East Worldham at 8pm and play for a couple of hours or so. Experienced musicians are also welcome, maybe to add some harmonies or to learn new tunes at a comfortable pace – just don’t expect us to play more quickly.

Do note however that it’s not a workshop or tutorial, so the onus will be on players to familiarise themselves with the tunes we play, to which end I’ll post scores, abc code, and links to videos to help you learn them.

Look forward to seeing you soon!
